February 26, 2010

brooklyn electro-pop duo jonka recently released their debut album, “slow and steady wins the race”.
a 9 song ep of upbeat and introspective musings. reoccurring themes of hope and love permeate the album.
this isn’t surprising since the duo also happen to be a married couple.
jonka has been performing together for years under different names from new york city to stockholm, sweden and back.
their music has been gaining airplay around the world through last.fm <
http://www.last.fm/music/jonka >  and have been featured on college radio and podcasts around the country.

“jonka is a refreshing blend of 80’s pop romanticism, great vocals and right-now beats.”
-GE SMITH (former SNL bandleader and guitarist for Bob Dylan and Hall and Oates)

jonka recently began a collaborative partnership with video artist quannum throw,  http://quannumthrow.wordpress.com/ who has been projecting visuals on stage at live performances.

a music video for jonka’s first single, “the nana song” will be released next month. a video premier party will be announced soon!

Fun in the NYC “blizzard”

February 11, 2010

Amidst the school, shop and transportation shut down due to the “blizzard” that hit Manhattan yesterday, my wife Jen and I took a walk through Central Park. After seeing all of the snow creations we decided to make our own. I can’t remember the last time that I made a snow man…good times.

A Soundtrack to Life, My Top 5 Recordings

February 1, 2010

I was talking with my oldest friend last night and we got on the subject of U2’s record, “The Joshua Tree.”
In our younger days, we used to listen to that cassette over and over while driving around in my first car, a four-door blue box with a tweaked engine (many thanks to my older brother David, a Wiz with a socket, hammer or cable tie) dubbed Ox as an early attempt at manhood…man we drove that car into the ground.
Back to the point, I thought about that record and its impact on my life. One song after another, GREAT songs that on their own stand tall but as a complete recording come together as a masterpiece. One ends and you know the next one, and it is now your favorite just like the last one was and the next one will be.
You know the words, every guitar lick, the changes, ups, downs…it was recorded for you like a soundtrack to your life. Every time you hear anything from or about the record you go to that place that is yours and can never be taken away.
I’ve been fortunate in life to have listened to several recordings that take me THERE, to the IT that Kerouac writes about in On the Road.

Here are my top 5:

(please note that this list may change order depending on mood and life)

1. London Calling by The Clash
2. The Joshua Tree by U2
3. Abbey Road by The Beatles
4. Grace by Jeff Buckley
5. Donny Hathaway Live

Feel free to leave your own list or stories in the comment section.

Did Steinbeck See The Future?

January 30, 2010

I’m reading The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck and last night I came upon this passage:

“Sure, cried the tenant men, but it’s our land. We measured it and broke it up. We were born on it, and we got killed on it, died on it. Even if it’s no good, it’s still ours. That’s what makes it ours – being born on it, working it, dying on it. That makes ownership, not a paper with numbers on it.

We’re sorry. It’s not us. It’s the  monster. The bank isn’t like a man.

Yes, but the bank is only made of men.

No, you’re wrong there – quite wrong there. The bank is something else than men. It happens that every man in a bank hates what the bank does, and yet the bank does it. The bank is something more than men, I tell you. It’s the monster. Men made it, but they can’t control it.”

Sounds like the news…
